day two // royal flora holland
The flower equivalent of the tuna auction at Toyosu market!! The flower auction was what I most wanted to visit when I started planning our netherlands trip!
怕人家不懂我来看花 hahah
They even have a lab which they call a knowledge centre to test the flowers and plants for their quality and vase life with the goal to provide the consumer a high quality product with sufficient vase life.
The now defunct bidding room. The auction is now held online.
The same type of auction clock is still used for their bidding! The price goes from a high price to a low price and the first person to bid will win the bid. So basically the earlier you bid the more expensive that lot of flowers will be. The other figures in the middle of the clock show the minimum amount to be purchased, total number of containers available, number of trolleys per batch, number of pieces per container etc etc.
Even though the auction is held online and no longer at site anymore, the distribution centre is still worth visiting! Very spectacular! I had never seen so many flowers in my life hahahah.
Even though there's a sign that says no honking but they were still honking everywhere. Apparently you don't need a driver's license to work as an orderpicker (the people driving the carts around). There's so many of them bustling around and the traffic is insane! They literally call their main driveway there a highway.
The auction house opens from 7AM to 11AM, and it's best to go right when they open. Most of the containers were empty by 9:30AM.
43 million flowers and 5 million plants on average gets auctioned off here each day! But not all of them are harvested in the Netherlands.
I learnt so much and 10/10 would go again if I visit Amsterdam again!
