Thevar
20210921_200245

Since it's #stillmybirthday - or rather, #stillourbirthday - Teresa and I picked the newly-minted one-star contemporary Indian restaurant to celebrate the occasion.

I learnt about Thevar from Seth Lui's coverage and it had been sitting on my list of places to try since.

Kicked things off with a pink guava vodka cocktail which was the only disappointing thing that night (thankfully!) Maybe I'm just not a fan of guava.

1st Snack - Beetroot Chaat

2nd Snack - Summer Truffle Maitake Mushroom Samosa

3rd Snack - Crispy Pork with Sambal Aioli

It's my first time trying a betel leaf, which I know is not as exciting as trying the betel nut, but it's probably the furthest I'll go to trying something from the betel family LOL

4th Snack - Candied Pani Puri

Coriander and Tellicherry Pepper Cured Hamachi in Coconut Sothi

Hands down my favourite dish of the night. Other than being perfectly flavourful (as with all other dishes that night), it was vibrant (both to the eyes and tongue), had a great mixture of textures, and a surprising contrast of temperatures (cold hamachi with the warm sothi)

Man, it was an explosion in my mouth.

Chettinad Chicken Roti

I'll happily have this alone (but like x5 of it) as a meal!! This is one of their signature dishes. Honestly I couldn't tell which is a signature or not because everything was equally good.

Palate Cleanser of Pink Guava and Kashmiri Chili Gujiya

A long time back, Ehren got me a box of vodka-filled chocolates from one of his trips, without telling me they were vodka-filled chocolates. So, imagine my shock to have a literal explosion of vodka shot hit my throat. This was the real explosion in my mouth; the hamachi sothi explosion is lame compared to the chocolate.

This guava thing employed the same trick which I did not see coming so I'll rate it 10/10 for theatrics hahah

A snack between courses of fish broth and "fish ball"

Not the chewy kind of fish ball, but the fish version of a meatball made of the meat from fish cheek and collar.

And the fish broth tasted SUPER FAMILIAR but clearly I have a terrible orientation in my palate library and can't pinpoint what I'm reminded of most times. This is one of those times.

Tandoori Rack of Lamb with Rumali Roti

I'm not a fan of lamb but this was not gamey at all and so tender. I usually leave a note to replace the lamb in my dietary note, but I banked on them serving a lamb dish that's prepared with lots of spices which will cover any gaminess, so that played off well. Phew.

That said, did this dish give me the confidence to try lamb at other places? No LOL sorry it's just an ingrained thing.

Rasmalai

There's a rum-soaked chiffon and cinnamon ice cream underneath the saffron foam. Kind of like the Indian version of a trifle isn't it?
